How to successfully migrate from Magento to Shopify

Are you running an online store on Magento and considering switching to Shopify? This can be a sensible and profitable decision.

Shopify offers numerous advantages for e-commerce companies, such as a user-friendly interface, a wide range of functions and tools as well as an extensive ecosystem of apps and integration options. Shopify also scores with reliable hosting, scalability and lower transaction fees for payment gateways. In this article, we would like to show you how to successfully prepare your Magento online shop data for migration to Shopify. The following steps should help you to make the migration as easy and smooth as possible:

1. create a backup of your store

Before you migrate from Magento to Shopify, you should make sure that your store's data is safe and secure. To create a backup of your Magento store, go to "System" > "Tools" > "Backups" in the admin sidebar. Select the type of backup you want to create.

2. export your data from Magento

Before you can import your data into Shopify, you need to export it from Magento. It is important that you export all relevant data such as customer information, orders and products. Open the Magento backend and go to the menu item "System" > "Export". Select the desired data and export it as a CSV file.

3. check your data for errors

Before you import your data into Shopify, you should check it thoroughly for errors and inconsistencies. This also includes checking the assignment of product images and variants. Especially if the Magento data is already incorrect or incomplete, it can be difficult to recognize these errors during the check. In such cases, we recommend seeking support from an experienced e-commerce expert or a Shopify partner .

4. prepare your data for import into Shopify

To ensure that your data can be imported correctly, you should prepare it for import into Shopify. This includes converting the data into CSV format and checking for incorrectly formatted data. Also check whether all the required data is available and add any missing data manually.

5. prepare your Shopify Shop for the import

To ensure that all data can be transferred completely, you usually have to create additional fields in Shopify. You have already created a good overview in the previous step. For the data that has no equivalent in Shopify, create the corresponding fields, e.g. as metafields, and adjust the formatting of the CSV file for the import.

6. import your data into Shopify

Once you have successfully prepared your data, you can import it into Shopify. There are various ways to do this, such as manually uploading the CSV file or using Shopify apps (we often use Matrixify for this, for example).

7. test your new Shopify online store

After you have successfully imported your data, you should test your new Shopify online store thoroughly. Sometimes it's a bit of trial and error. So, don't get discouraged and optimize the import bit by bit. Finally, browse through your online store and check all the functions, such as adding products, placing an order and creating customers. Also test all payment and shipping options and check that all data is saved correctly in the system.‍
